Nose Aesthetics
What is Nose Aesthetics (Rinoplasty)?
Nose aesthetics, or rhinoplasty, is the name given to surgical operations performed to reshape the nose.
It is performed in order to eliminate the deformities of the nose that are congenital, occur later or occur due to trauma.
Among the reasons for having rhinoplasty are to correct congenital defects, to change the physical appearance of the nose to repair deformities that occur later or to repair injuries, or to facilitate breathing by improving some respiratory difficulties.
In some cases, the deformity is corrected only because it causes visual discomfort, while in most people it can be preferred because it causes problems such as respiratory disorders.
In rhinoplasty, the nose can be reduced and enlarged, its angle can be changed relative to the upper lip, the shape of the tip of the nose can be changed, and the indentations and protrusions can be aesthetically improved. During the operation, the plastic surgeon reaches the part where the bone and cartilage supporting the nose are located through a small incision. According to the expected result after the operation, some bone and cartilage can be removed or added.
Preparation Before Nose Surgery
Before the operation, a detailed interview should be made with the patient. After the examination, information about the inside of the nose is obtained by computed tomography. After the nose surgery, your doctor will inform you about the medications you can/t use.
Surgery time and Anesthesia at Doctor Zen Clinic
In general, the duration of the operation varies according to the procedure to be performed, but it can vary between 2-3 hours. This surgery can be performed under rhinoplasty, sedation or general anesthesia. However, operating the patients under general anesthesia is much more comfortable for the patient and the surgeon.
Surgery Technique
In the presence of minimal deformity in the nose, closed surgery will be sufficient. However, open technique is used in surgeries that will change the general appearance of the nose, which usually requires operations for the tip of the nose. In this technique, the operation is performed by separating the nasal skin, the cartilage and bone structure underneath, through an incision made from the structure in the middle of both nostrils, called the columella.
When the arch on the nasal dorsum is straightened, the nasal roof becomes open and this gap needs to be removed by breaking the nasal bones. Surgical suture materials and cartilage grafts are needed to shape the cartilage tissue outside the nasal bones, especially the tip of the nose. Generally, the cartilage tissue taken from the nasal septum of the patients who will be operated for the first time, which we call primary rhinoplasty cases, is sufficient for this procedure. In cases where excess cartilage tissue is required, cartilage tissue to be taken from the ear or rib can be used for the operation. At the end of the operation, a silicone pad is placed inside the nose and a thermoplastic splint is placed outside the nose, and these are removed after 2 and 7 days, respectively.
Postoperative Period
Although there may be a feeling of nausea and dizziness in the early period after rhinoplasty, such conditions can be relieved with medication. In the early period, there may be swelling on the face and bruises around the eyes. The source of the bruises is usually the blood leaking under the skin during the shaping of the bones, which will not cause any problems and should not be a concern. Ice therapy to be applied in the early postoperative period is very effective in reducing these bruises and pain.
After the surgery, temporary loss of sensation, feeling of fullness, swelling can be seen in the nose and these begin to improve over time. Soft irrigation with saline or similar fluids is beneficial in order to prevent crusting in the nose and related respiratory tract closure after the surgery and to moisten the mucosa.
Possible Complications of Surgery
As with any surgery, rhinoplasty also has complications. Among these, conditions such as infection, respiratory distress, failure to achieve the desired success after surgery, septum perforation, and numbness may occur. As Doctor Zen, as a clinic that has been providing professional health services for more than 20 years, we perform rhinoplasty operations with great care in order not to encounter such complications.
